Bringing experienced knowledgeable or skilled non teachers into our schools can only benefit all. Older people in particular have a huge contribution to make. OK it needs a framework but union resistance and management fear need to be dealt with.
At last we are getting the counter to performance indicators - a 20 year disaster in evaluation of effectiveness. Education, like good management is about process. Having been in education and project evaluation since 1970 I have quietly said this since then. Hopefully common sense and this view is coming back. It has been a sad time, bad for young people, bad for teachers & educators and bad for good managers.
Incidentally Chris Hoy talking of achieving gold medals in the Olympics where performance indicators might be seen as the key clearly describes how in fact it is all about process. Good product comes from good process.
